Excitement for the future because of REA Leadership!
Mishawaka has a bright future! Mayor Rea and his team have worked hard to put Mishawaka in a position to continue its great progress. One can't help but drive around town and see some of the great things happening in and around our community. Among those exciting things you'll see this summer and early fall are:
After 21 years of anticipation, construction will begin on the Main Street Underpass. Improvements should be complete in the summer of 2009. The City also is moving forward with plans to improve Main Street north, between Donaldson and Catalpa and south of the Underpass between Mishawaka Avenue and Broadway.
This fall, the City will complete the next phase of the Mishawaka Riverwalk, connecting Battell Park and Central Park, under the Main Street Bridge.
In the spring of 2008, the City will begin construction of the next piece of the Mishawaka Riverwalk, connecting Kamm Island and Kate's Garden, behind the Wastewater Treatment Plant. Federal funds have been secured to assist with this project.
Construction of the new St. Joseph Regional Medical Center will advance. The $355 million project will be complete in the fall of 2009.
Construction has begun on the $35 million improvement to the University Park Mall. The new lifestyle center should be ready for shoppers in 2008.
Construction will wrap up this fall on the $40 million improvement to the Mishawaka Utilities Wastewater Treatment Plant. The expansion will help make sure Mishawaka is in a position to handle our sewer needs in the future, and will help us continue to grow.
The Grand re-opening of the theater at the Battell Community Center will occur in October. The $1 million renovation includes air-conditioning, roof, tuck pointing, and new seats.
Construction is underway on the long awaited improvements to E. Jefferson Blvd., between Byrkit and Capital Avenue. Construction should wrap up in the summer 2008. The project is being financed with 80% federal funds, and a 20 % local match.
Last month, Ruth's Chris Steakhouse opened in Mishawaka. This is the smallest market in the United States where Ruth's Chris will have a restaurant. Mayor Rea believes this speaks to the health of our local retail market.
The hotel market remains strong, as two new hotels are under construction in Mishawaka, as well as the expansion of a third. Residence Inn by Marriott on Day Road opened in September, Hyatt Place on Day Road has broken ground and will open early next year, and Varsity Clubs, one of our first hotels on the north side, is nearing the completion of a 24 room expansion.
Construction is underway on the Ironworks of Mishawaka project in downtown Mishawaka. The $300 Million plus project includes a mix of commercial, office, and residential uses. Townhomes on the west end are currently being built, and recently announcements have been made about a new restaurant and office building to be constructed in the downtown on the former Uniroyal property.
Construction has begun on the Riverwalk Townhomes project, just east of Battell Park. As the Riverwalk construction comes to an end, you will begin seeing townhomes constructed where the land has been previously cleared. This and the Ironworks project represent the first significant construction in the downtown sine the mid-1980's.
Those listed represent just a few of the exciting things going on in our community over the next few years. Many of these projects have advanced because of Mayor Rea's leadership. In order to continue this great progress, remember to vote for Mayor Rea this November.
